The idea of handing that over to someone else, especially for a trip at this level, can feel genuinely uncomfortable.

Here's what we've found: The travelers who describe themselves as control-oriented often get the most out of a D:U experience. Not because they've abandoned their instincts, but because they've chosen — consciously, deliberately — to trust someone else with the details so they can focus on something more important: actually being present for the adventure.

You're not losing control. You're redirecting it toward the thing that matters most — showing up fully for what's waiting for you out there.

The short answer? Yes.

Solo travelers actually make up a large share of our D:U adventurers, and it's easy to see why: There's something uniquely powerful about stepping into the unknown on your own terms.

Couples are still our most common D:U travelers, and we've designed experiences for every dynamic: two people fully committed to the adventure, and plenty where one needed a little more convincing before becoming the trip's biggest fan.

We've also designed D:U adventures for groups of friends — a few couples traveling together, a group of women celebrating a milestone, old friends long overdue for an adventure — and yes, even families with young kids.

If you're wondering whether your particular situation works for a D:U, the answer is almost certainly yes. The format is flexible. The only thing that's non-negotiable is the spirit of adventure you bring to it.

This comes up a lot — and it's one of our favorite conversations to have. Usually what's underneath the hesitation isn't really about the trip. It's about trust. Trusting that someone they've never met will understand what they value, what makes them uncomfortable, and what they need to feel both safe and genuinely excited. That's a fair ask.

The planning process is a two-way conversation, not a one-way form. Both of your voices matter, and we work hard to make sure we hear them — separately, if that's helpful. If one of you needs more reassurance than the other, we'll take the time to earn it. We've helped plenty of skeptical travelers become the most enthusiastic ones by the time the reveal call rolls around.

Traveling with a group of friends? Same principle applies. Whether it's two of you or six, everyone's preferences, comfort levels, and must-haves get factored in. The person leading the charge doesn't have to carry the whole group's expectations alone — that's our job.

Every D:U adventure follows a clear process — and knowing it tends to make the whole thing feel a lot less like a leap of faith.

It starts with a simple phone or Zoom call, just to get to know each other and make sure D:U is the right fit. No commitment required. If it feels right on both sides, we'll send you some forms to complete — the foundation of everything we'll build together.

From there, we have a more in-depth series of conversations to really get under the hood: who you are as a person and as a traveler, where you've been, what's moved you and what's missed the mark, your interests, your budget, how long you want to travel, and when. The more we understand you, the better we can do our job.

Once we have everything we need, our team gathers to brainstorm and deliberate. Your travel designer — with input from the rest of the team and our in-destination partners who know these places intimately — selects the destination they believe is the best possible fit for you, and gets to work designing your trip from the ground up.

This is not a ‘spin-the-globe’ kind of moment: Every destination we choose, every experience we build into your itinerary, every detail we obsess over is a direct reflection of everything you've told us. Meticulous, intentional, and designed entirely around you.

And here's something worth knowing: Across the dozens of DUs we have planned, some of our travelers' most beloved destinations were places they never would have chosen on their own. That's not luck. It's what happens when you trust the process and let someone who knows you — and knows the world — make the call.

When we're confident that every detail is exactly right, we collect your deposit. Final payment comes 90 days before departure.

Then comes the moment everyone's been waiting for: The Reveal. One to two days before you leave, we sit down with you on a Zoom call and reveal everything — your destination, your itinerary, and the story of why we chose it for you.

The next day, we create a WhatsApp group and introduce you to your local team on the ground.

And then you go.

Absolutely, and we encourage both.

As part of our intake process, we'll ask you about your travel history and whether there are regions of the world you'd prefer to avoid — or have no interest in visiting. We take that seriously. We also do a thorough travel history review so we're not sending you somewhere you've already been — with some nuance. If you spent a weekend in Rome at 22 and you're now 50 and have never been back to Italy, we might still consider it. Context matters.

On the flip side, if there are destinations you've always dreamed of visiting, you're welcome to hand us a list and let us choose from it. We've had travelers say "here are ten places I've always wanted to go — you pick." That's a completely valid way to do a D:U, and we love it.

One thing worth noting: We only design trips to destinations that are safe and stable. Any region experiencing military conflict, significant political instability, or active travel advisories is automatically off the table — you never have to worry about that.

You tell us, and we design around it. Whether you have mobility considerations, dietary restrictions, food allergies, or medical needs that affect how you travel, all of that gets factored into your trip from the very beginning — not as an afterthought. Our intake process is thorough precisely because these details matter. If something changes between when we start planning and when you depart, let us know. We'd rather over-communicate than have you navigating something alone on the road.

We handle all of it. Domestic connections, international flights, cabin class, seat preferences — you share your details with us and we take care of the rest. We collect your TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, and frequent flyer information as part of the process.

One thing worth knowing: We can't book your flights using frequent flyer points. If we did, you'd be able to log into your account and see your routing — which would spoil the surprise pretty quickly. What we can do is add your frequent flyer number to the reservation after we've revealed your destination, or you can have the miles credited to your account after your trip. Either way, you won't lose them.

Travel insurance is included in your trip, and it covers the things that matter most: trip cancellation and health and medical coverage while you're traveling.

If you'd like additional peace of mind, we also offer the option to upgrade to a cancel-for-any-reason policy, which gives you maximum flexibility. That comes at an additional cost, but for some travelers it's well worth it. We're happy to walk you through the options when we get to that stage of planning.

For most destinations, it's simpler than you'd think. The majority of countries Explorer X sends travelers to do not require visas, offer e-Visas, or visa-on-arrival, so there's no consulate visit or passport stamping required. We handle the guidance and make sure everything is sorted well ahead of your departure.

In practice, we're also thoughtful about destination selection with this in mind — we're not going to design a D:U around a destination that creates a complicated visa process for you.

This is probably the most common practical question we get — and the answer is more reassuring than you might expect. About 1–2 months before your departure, we'll send you climate and packing information so you can start preparing. We give you enough detail — expected temperatures, day and night ranges, general conditions — to pack appropriately without giving away the destination. We're deliberate about keeping it vague enough to preserve the surprise, but specific enough that you're not guessing. At worst, you might find yourself narrowing it down to a handful of possible destinations — which, honestly, is part of the fun.

If your trip requires any technical gear, specific equipment, or vaccinations, we'll make sure you have everything you need with plenty of time to prepare. We're not going to leave you scrambling two days before departure.

We've got you. That's not a marketing line — it's a commitment we take seriously.

Before you leave, you'll have a dedicated travel designer who knows your trip inside and out. Once you're on the ground, we set up a WhatsApp group connecting you directly with our team — both here in the States and with our in-destination partners. If something unexpected comes up, you're not Googling solutions at midnight alone. You have real people with real local knowledge in your corner.

We've helped travelers navigate missed connections, sudden illness, natural disruptions, and everything in between. Our job doesn't end when you board the plane — it ends when you're safely home.

You can't read up on the history, learn phrases in the local language, or spend hours curating a list of restaurants. All of that falls away.
