Journey To The Red Heart of Zion

With best Selling Author of 2 Books on the Experience Economy: 'Stuffocation' and 'Time And How To Spend It'

Time stops when you grapple over the sharp peaks and take in the deep reds of Zion National Park. A hawk shrieks in the distance. The air is clean and dry. You can smell the sage that devours the red clay across the park. This journey to one of the United States's most enchanting National Parks will re-awaken your senses. It will invigorate and challenge you in the moment. It will inspire a new perception of what you need in your life for joy and enduring happiness.

Your guide will be James Wallman, an international best-selling author and thought-leader in happiness and the experience economy. James has worked closely with the team at Explorer X to design a trip that will not only take you through a stunning physical environment, but also lead you on a mental and emotional journey. Through cave hiking, canyoneering and conversation; through sweat lodge ceremonies, sound healing and journalling – you'll be inspired to have innovative, brilliant and radical thoughts about yourself, your life, and your journey.

Come with us on this epic trip to the red heart of Zion, and you will have a unique, memorable, moving experience with a small group of other travelers who are interested in a deeper, more challenging, more meaningful type of travel – and a more compelling life.

James Wallman

Best-selling author

James fell in love with adventure as a boy scout, and when his parents split and his Dad took him on outdoor activity holidays: kayaking, horse-riding, abseiling, making rafts, climbing trees. Mostly in Wales. Usually in the rain. Formerly a holiday rep in Greece, ski guide in France, and round-the-world traveller, James has also worked in sales and marketing in digital media in Palo Alto and London, and as a journalist.

James's driving passion is to stimulate the 'experience economy' and encourage everyone in our society to become 'experientialists': people who realise the best place to find happiness and status is in experiences. He's given talks on this from Amsterdam to Beijing to California, from Google HQ to TEDxLondon School of Economics and 10 Downing Street. He's been on TV & radio talking about it, from the BBC to MSNBC and NPR. He launched a startup to get people to spend less on stuff and more on experiences instead: it was a experience gifting platform. All his friends told him it was a bad idea. And they were mostly right! It failed after 18 months.

After that James wrote his latest book. It's a distillation of the discoveries made by psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists at universities like Stanford, Harvard, the LSE, MIT, UCLA etc. It's these evidence-based insights that, in collaboration with Explorer X's approach, informed the design of this trip. James has recently been appointed 'Sector Specialist, Experience Economy' by the UK government's Department for International Trade. He is giving a keynote at the 'TED of wellbeing', the World Happiness Summit, in March 2020.

We believe that your space for slumber should also allow room and comfort for thoughtful reflection at the end of a long day. Sleeping under the stars? - Check. Boutique camping in a canvas abode? - Check. Sleeping in a desert bungalow in the American Southwest desert? - You got it! Each will help you appreciate the long day you've just had, and prepare you for the next. But each will also offer more than this. Just as your journey to Zion will constantly surprise and inspire you, so each resting place has been deliberately selected and placed on your itinerary so that you rest, recover, reflect and reintegrate at the most appropriate moments.
