 The rustle in the bushes and thuds in the dirt crossing the path in front of the vehicle bring a rush of adrenaline for children and adults alike. This safari-based, family-focused itinerary to the African nation of Tanzania is sure to ignite curiosity, joy and inspiration for all. Join Explorer X on this multi-family Explorer NeXt adventure built strategically to develop skills and a growth mind-set for the next generation of explorers.

Throughout this twelve day journey, you will experience wildlife up close and personal, connect and develop relationships with new cultures, and join in on enriching conversations with Explorer X Co-Founder, Jake Haupert. As an expert and innovator in the field of Transformational Travel, his perspectives and guided practices of maximizing growth and skill development in travel will make this Tanzanian safari an out-of-school learning adventure.

 Your Journey

Day 1 - Kilimanjaro

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport. After clearing customs and Immigration formalities you will be met and transferred to your Lodge. Driving away from the airport and out onto an open road with no city in sight…it feels like your safari has already begun.

Group Orientation + Welcome Dinner with Jake and family

Day 2 - Great Rift Valley

On route to the Great Rift Valley we will pull off the main road and drive through the bush to a working Masai Village. Here you will meet with the Elders and be shown around their manyatta. During a walk through the village, your personal Maasai guide is explaining the life, past and today’s life of the Tanzania Maasai. We will then head back into the bush where we will have a Bush Barbecue set up under an Acacia tree for lunch.

Day 3 - Manyara National Park

After a leisurely breakfast we will head to a nearby school called Kilimatembo, where you will have a first hand experience of how a Tanzania secondary school is run here in Tanzania. Throughout the day you will visit a local community with 120 tribes living happily side by side, eat lunch at a local village restaurant and head to Manyara National Park for your first game viewing experience.

Day 4 - Lake Eyasi

Today you will depart to Lake Eyasi for a chance to visit the two interesting and remote group of people who inhabit the area - the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes. This unique cultural program will give you a chance to learn all about how these tribes live in harmony with the land as well as go hunting and berry picking with them.

Day 5 - Ngorongoro Highlands

After breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Highlands and descend with a picnic lunch served near a small lake filled with hippos in the 2,000 feet into the crater. Ngorongoro Crater is the World’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Due to its size and diversity, the crater floor is comprised of distinct areas, ranging from forest, swamps, lakes and springs, to open grassland and sandy dunes.

Day 6 - Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, drive to Serengeti National Park, visiting on route one of the world's most important prehistoric sites, Olduvai Gorge, for a tour and lecture. Learn how the gorge was vital in establishing the African origin of humankind and in turn, why it is referred to as the 'Cradle of Mankind'.

Day 7 & 8 - Serengeti National Park

As the sun rises on your second day in the Serengeti, make the most of the game viewing. Order a picnic breakfast or lunch and head out into the bush and spend the day looking for game while enjoying the magic that this park has to offer. Later back at camp dinner is served and evening drinks by the camp fire is the perfect way to discuss the day’s events.

Day 9 - Arusha

After breakfast you will be transferred to the airstrip for scheduled flight to Arusha. Upon arrrival, you will be met and transferred to Arusha Coffee Lodge ‘Shanga experience’ for lunch and visit the Shanga shangaa workshops, located near the lunch venue. The aim of Shanga Shangaa is to provide full time employment and training to help the locally disabled Tanzanian’s by creating unique bead work and glass work.

Day 10 - Extension, Pangani

Full day at leisure to explore the surrounding area or just enjoy the activities that are available at the lodge or relax on the beautiful beach

Day 11 - Extension, Pangani

After breakfast you will be transferred to the airstrip for scheduled flight to Dar. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred from the Domestic Terminal to the International Terminal and connect with your International flight home.

Mount Meru Game Lodge | Arusha

Set in beautiful and tranquil surroundings, the Mount Meru Game Lodge is nestled between the Usa river and the wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to zebra, ostrich, water buffalo, mongoose, duiker and a wide array of birds and monkeys, including the elusive Colobus monkey. The Mount Meru Game Lodge is equidistant from the city of Arusha and Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) - each an easy 30 minute drive on good roads.

Gibb’s Farm | Karatu

Gibb's Farm is located on the forested outside slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater in Northern Tanzania, overlooking the centuries old Great Rift Valley. Discover a sense of wellbeing, tranquillity and history, deeply rooted in East African culture and community, a welcome retreat for a few days’ respite while on safari or extended vacation. Lemala Ewanjan Tented Camp | Central Serengeti

Lemala Ewanjan is an authentic intimate tented camp set in a secluded part of the game-rich Seronera Valley in Central Serengeti and is renknowned for its year-round game viewing due to its abundance of water in the many rivers, as well as for its large populations of resident big cats. Each tent is fitted with two queen-size beds with warm duvets, a flush toilet, large safari-style shower, plentiful running water, wooden storage cabinets and flooring, 24-hour solar lighting and outside loungers from which to enjoy early morning teas and coffees and refreshing afternoon gin and tonics.

The Tides Lodge and Villa | Pangani

The Tides is a family owned lodge located on a magnificent beach. The hotel accommodation boasts bright, spacious and stylish interiors. All the cottages have modern en suite bathrooms. Fresh tropical flowers are placed in each room every day.Other features include king size beds with imported mattresses and sheets, mosquito nets, electric fans, electricity, locally made soap, solar heated hot water, private verandas with deck chairs and private sunbathing areas. The restaurant and bar are right on the beach; freshly caught seafood is one of the restaurant’s specialities.
